Flying TAP Air Portugal with Golf Clubs: The Rules Have Changed

TAP Air Portugal used to let golfers check clubs for free — that blanket promotion is gone. Here's what determines whether you pay now, and roughly how much.

TAP Air Portugal isn't the airline most golfers fly direct into Faro on — its own Faro routes are limited to Lisbon and Funchal — but plenty of travellers connecting through Lisbon from further afield, or combining a few days in the capital with a golf trip to the Algarve, end up flying TAP with their clubs. If you're one of them, it's worth knowing the rules changed: TAP used to let golfers check clubs for free as a standing promotion, and that's no longer guaranteed by default.

How TAP treats golf clubs

Golf equipment travels as checked baggage, and TAP treats a golf bag as one single item regardless of its actual shape, with combined dimensions (length + width + height) up to 158cm and a weight limit of 32kg. Kept within those limits, no oversize or out-of-gauge surcharge applies on top of whatever else you owe.

When it's included in your fare

TAP's own baggage terms say sports equipment can be included in your free hold baggage allowance if it fits the limits above — so the first question is what your fare already includes. Basic and Classic fares typically come with one free checked bag up to 23kg, Plus fares with two, and Business class allows up to 32kg. If your golf bag is the only hold item you're checking and it's under your fare's weight limit, it can use that included allowance rather than costing anything extra.

When you'll pay, and roughly how much

Where TAP has changed is that the golf-specific free-transport promotion it used to run is gone, so if your clubs go beyond what your fare already covers — a Basic fare with no included bag, or a golf bag on top of a separate suitcase — you're charged TAP's sports equipment fee rather than getting any golf-specific discount. On European routes (which covers a Lisbon–Faro connection), that runs from roughly €45 booked online, more if paid at the airport, and considerably more again on intercontinental sectors. Treat that as a starting point rather than a fixed number — TAP prices it by route and how far ahead you book, so check the actual figure in Manage My Booking for your specific flights.

How to book it

Sports equipment can be added when you book, through Manage My Booking, at check-in, at an airport kiosk, or via the TAP Contact Centre — up to 24 hours before departure, though it's subject to availability, so earlier is safer than leaving it to the last day. It can also be paid for using TAP Miles&Go points instead of cash, worth checking if you fly TAP often enough to have a balance sitting there.

The alternative: skip the connection hassle and rent at Faro

If your TAP itinerary already involves a connection through Lisbon, adding a golf bag into that mix — checking it through, hoping it makes a tight transfer, collecting it at the other end — is its own source of stress even before fees come into it. Renting on arrival sidesteps the whole thing. Two operators are based directly at Faro Airport (FAO), one in the arrivals hall and one at a departures-terminal counter, so you can walk off your final flight and either take a set with you or have it delivered to your hotel or first round.

Bottom line

Flying TAP with your own clubs can still be free if your fare includes a bag and your golf set fits inside that allowance — but don't assume it, since the old blanket golf promotion is gone. Check what your specific fare includes before you fly, and if a Lisbon connection makes the logistics feel like more trouble than it's worth, renting locally once you land in Faro is a straightforward way around it.
