What golf lessons in the Algarve really cost, from €30 for 30 minutes, plus the best beginner schools and golf academies in every part of the region.
The Algarve is one of the best places in Europe to learn golf. The weather lets you practise outdoors almost all year, most of the big resorts run a teaching academy with PGA professionals, and lesson prices are often lower than at a UK club. This guide covers what golf lessons in the Algarve actually cost, the beginner schools worth knowing about, and the best academies in each part of the region.
Every price below comes from the academies' own published price lists. We note the season where a list is older, and prices can change, so always confirm when you book.
A one-hour private lesson with a PGA professional costs roughly €60 to €80, and a 30-minute lesson around €30 to €55. These are the published rates at four of the region's academies:
Castro Marim (East Algarve): €30 for 30 minutes, €60 for an hour, or five 30-minute lessons for €140.
Penina (Portimão): €40 for 30 minutes and €65 for an hour, on the academy's 2024/25 price list.
Pestana Golf Academy (Carvoeiro and Silves): €35 for 30 minutes and €65 for an hour. Bring a friend and an hour for two costs €75 in total.
Vilamoura Golf Academy: €55 for 30 minutes and €81 for an hour on its 2026 price list, with 15% off for guests at the resort's official hotels.
Sharing a lesson is the easiest way to save money. At Vilamoura, a one-hour group class for two costs €108, which works out at €54 each. Pestana's two-person hour works out at €37.50 each.
If you are starting from scratch, a short beginner school is better value than a string of one-off lessons. You get a structured plan, a few hours of coaching spread over several days, and usually a first round on the course with your teacher at the end.
Pestana Beginners School: three days of 90-minute sessions for €162.50 per person, or five days for €250 per person, with a minimum of two people.
Penina Beginners Golf Clinic: five days with one hour of coaching a day, covering the full swing, short game, putting and basic rules and etiquette. It ends with a game on the course with the professional. Unlimited range balls, a hand trolley and a set of clubs are included, so you do not need to bring anything. On the 2024/25 list it cost €284 per person for groups of four to eight, or €355 per person for one to three people.
Vilamoura lesson packs: five hours of coaching (or three hours on the range plus two on the course) for €370, or €490 for two people. Every pack includes a nine-hole game with the professional.
Quinta do Lago Golf School: programmes from half a day to five days at the Paul McGinley Academy, booked through the resort's online booking system. Prices are not published.
Vilamoura Golf Academy runs a five-day Handicap Golf Certificate programme that combines practice on the course with classroom sessions, priced at €899 plus a €170 handicap fee on its 2026 list. It is the only programme of its kind we found on an Algarve academy's price list. For why a handicap matters, and which courses let you play without one, see our guide: Do you need a handicap to play golf in the Algarve?
Penina has one of the best practice grounds in the region: an 80-metre-wide natural grass driving range, plus the Resort Course, a nine-hole layout that needs no handicap, so you can take your lesson onto a real course straight away. The Pestana Golf Academy teaches across the Pestana courses, including Gramacho in Carvoeiro, in English and German. Further west, Palmares in Lagos has its own academy, whose head coach also coaches European Tour player Ricardo Santos.

The academy at Amendoeira is one of the best equipped in Portugal, with TrackMan, V1 video analysis, BodiTrak and SAM PuttLab, a maximum of five students per teacher, and schools from half a day to five days. It also has a nine-hole par-3 Academy course, which the resort says is the only floodlit nine-hole course in Portugal. Near Albufeira, Pine Cliffs runs a golf academy with PGA instructors next to its clifftop nine-hole course, which you can play without a handicap from the red tees.

The Vilamoura Golf Academy is based at the Pinhal course and uses TrackMan and Flightscope. Alongside private lessons and packs, it runs short themed programmes through the year, such as a Couples Golf Experience (€759 for two), a two-day Short Game Focus (€259) and a Ladies Golf School (€659). Check the academy's calendar for dates. Lessons for groups of up to four are also available.
Quinta do Lago is home to the only Paul McGinley Academy in the world, named after the 2014 European Ryder Cup captain, together with a TaylorMade Performance Centre for club fitting. It offers private lessons, golf schools and on-course playing lessons. A playing lesson is worth knowing about if you don't have a handicap: Quinta do Lago normally requires an official handicap certificate, but not when you play with one of its teaching professionals.
Castro Marim has the lowest published lesson prices on this list, with resident professional Peter O'Connor teaching beginners through to low handicappers. Nine-hole playing lessons cost €75 and 18-hole playing lessons €135, plus the green fee. At the other end of the scale, Monte Rei has PGA professionals and a Swing Studio for lessons and club fitting.
Book before you travel. Professionals work by appointment and diaries fill up in spring and autumn, the busiest golf seasons.
Don't bring clubs for your first lessons. Academies have clubs you can use, and some clinics include them in the price. Once you are hooked, look at renting clubs for the rest of the trip rather than paying the airline fee.
Ask for a playing lesson. Nine holes with a professional teaches you how to get round a course, keep up the pace and follow the etiquette, which is exactly what a new golfer finds hardest.
Stay at the resort. Several academies give hotel guests better rates, such as the 15% discount at Vilamoura.
