Lufthansa usually lets golf clubs travel within your normal baggage allowance — except on its cheapest Light fare. Here's how the fare rules work and what it costs if you don't qualify.
Lufthansa flies into Faro from Frankfurt and Munich, so it's really an option for golfers travelling from Germany or connecting through one of Lufthansa's hubs on a longer journey. Like British Airways and TAP, it doesn't automatically charge a flat golf fee the way the low-cost carriers do — whether you pay comes down to your fare type.
How Lufthansa treats golf clubs
A golf bag containing your clubs, balls and a pair of shoes is classed as sports baggage, and on most fares it simply counts toward your existing free baggage allowance rather than being charged as an extra. The exception is Lufthansa's cheapest Economy Light fare, which excludes sports baggage from its allowance entirely — on that fare, golf clubs are always an additional cost, not something you can fit inside what's already included.
Weight and size limits
The allowance covers up to 32kg, with combined dimensions (length + width + height) up to 220cm — the most generous size limit of any airline in this series, giving plenty of room even for an oversized travel case. Sports baggage needs to be registered at least 24 hours before departure, so it's not something to leave until you're already at the airport.
What it costs if it isn't included
If you're on a Light fare, or your golf bag pushes you past what your fare already includes, Lufthansa charges by route zone rather than a flat number. On European routes — which covers a Frankfurt or Munich flight to Faro — that's typically around €80 each way. Rates step up steeply for longer-haul routes, which isn't relevant for a Faro trip but shows the fee is genuinely route-based rather than fixed. Confirm the live price when you book, since these figures shift.
A perk worth knowing about if you fly Lufthansa often
Lufthansa also carries golf equipment free for its top-tier frequent flyers — HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold members — though that perk doesn't apply on Light fares or on routes to the US and Canada. If you or someone in your group holds that status, it's worth checking before assuming the standard fee applies.
The alternative: rent clubs right at Faro Airport
Even when the clubs travel for free, there's still a golf bag to manage through check-in, security and — if you're connecting via a Lufthansa hub — a transfer as well. Renting sidesteps all of that. Two operators are based directly inside Faro Airport (FAO), one in the arrivals hall and one at a departures-terminal counter, so you can land with nothing to collect from oversize baggage and either take a rented set with you or have it delivered to your hotel or first course.
