Alamos vs Morgado: which Portimão golf course should you play?

Alamos and Morgado share a designer, a resort and a hotel near Portimão, but the two courses play nothing alike. Here's what actually separates them, and which one suits your handicap.

Alamos Golf and Morgado Golf sit less than a kilometre apart in the hills north of Portimão, share the same designer and the same on-site hotel, and are often booked together as a two-course package. But mix them up and you could book the wrong round: one is a tight, tree-lined course built for a relaxed day, the other is a championship layout that has hosted the Portuguese Open. Here's what actually separates Alamos from Morgado, and which one suits your game.

One resort, one designer, two very different courses

Both courses belong to the Morgado do Reguengo resort above Portimão, and both were laid out by Russell Talley of European Golf Design — Morgado first, in 2003, followed by Alamos in 2006. They share a driving range and practice academy at the clubhouse, and the same on-site hotel, so choosing one course doesn't mean losing access to the other's facilities. What differs is the golf itself: Morgado was built as the resort's championship test, while Alamos was designed deliberately narrower and quieter as its counterpart.

Alamos: tighter fairways, fewer bunkers, a gentler test

Alamos plays to a par of 71 over 5,710 metres, shorter and noticeably tighter than its sister course. Fairways run narrower between mature trees, and Alamos carries well fewer bunkers than Morgado, so the challenge here is accuracy and course management rather than raw length. The back nine runs alongside two lakes with the Serra de Monchique hills as a backdrop. Both courses share the same maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies, but Alamos is the more forgiving layout for mid-to-high handicappers or a relaxed day out.

Morgado: the championship layout that hosted the Portuguese Open

Morgado is the longer, harder round: par 73 over 6,399 metres, with wide fairways offset by Scottish-inspired pot bunkers and large, undulating greens that punish a poor approach. It's the more decorated course of the two — Morgado hosted the Open de Portugal on the European Tour and Challenge Tour in 2017, 2018 and 2019. If you want to play the same layout the professionals competed on, this is it.

Which one should you play?

If you're a higher handicapper, travelling with mixed-ability golfers, or just want an enjoyable round without punishing rough or constant bunker escapes, play Alamos. If you want the sterner test, the tournament pedigree, or you're a single-figure or low-teens handicapper after a proper challenge, go straight to Morgado. Green fees start from a similar €78 at both, so price isn't the deciding factor — and because the two courses share a hotel and a practice academy, there's nothing stopping you from playing both on the same trip.

Where to stay: one hotel for both courses

Both courses share the same on-site hotel, NAU Morgado Golf & Country Club, a 4-star, 98-room property with balconies overlooking the fairways, four outdoor pools and the Club House restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Staying here puts you a short walk from both first tees, which makes comparing the two courses across consecutive days genuinely easy. You can book the hotel directly on Booking.com.
