Six Algarve courses where the Atlantic isn't just scenery — it's part of the round. From cliff-top par 3s to fairways that run along the sand, here's where to find real ocean views.
Most golf courses in the Algarve promise sea views somewhere on the scorecard, but only a handful actually put the Atlantic in play. These six are tagged ocean view on our map for a reason — real coastal or clifftop holes, not just a glimpse from the clubhouse terrace. Here's what makes each one worth the detour, and where to stay if you want to wake up to the same view.
The Royal Course's par-3 16th is played from a tee perched atop three crumbling sandstone cliffs, 235 yards out over the Atlantic — regularly ranked among the most photographed golf holes in Europe. Rocky Roquemore reshaped Sir Henry Cotton's original layout in 1997, and the clifftop finishing stretch is what most people actually picture when they think of Algarve golf. The on-site Dona Filipa Hotel puts you a short walk from the first tee.

Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s redesign spread Palmares across three nines — Alvor, Lagos and Praia — and it's the Praia nine that delivers the goods: genuine links golf above Meia Praia beach, with sweeping Atlantic and estuary views from an elevated driving range. Stay at the on-site Palmares Beach House Hotel.

Howard Swan's design climbs through cork-oak woodland above Lagos, and the higher the course goes, the more of the Atlantic you see — several holes on the back nine look straight down to the coastline. It's also one of the better-value ocean-view rounds in the western Algarve. On-site: Boavista Golf & Spa Resort.

Every hole on this nine-hole course sits atop sandstone cliffs above Olhos de Água, six of them par-3s, which makes it playable even if you're a beginner. The sixth, known as the Devil's Parlour, sends you across a ravine to a green above the ocean — the standout short hole on this coast. It's part of the Pine Cliffs Resort, with the Pine Cliffs Residence on site.

This nine-hole, all-par-3 course above Carvoeiro is the easiest way to get an Algarve sea view into your golf without needing a low handicap — the longest hole is only 145 metres. It's a genuinely useful short-game course too, not just a novelty stop.

San Lorenzo borders the Ria Formosa lagoon rather than the open sea, but its coastal holes and long-standing reputation as one of continental Europe's best-rated courses earn it a place on this list. Worth knowing before you book: the clubhouse burned down and the club is currently operating from temporary facilities while it rebuilds — the course itself is unaffected, and access typically runs through partner hotels rather than direct booking.
